English is important for some reasons.  First of all, English is an International language that is commonly used. You can communicate with the foreigners by it.   Second, most of schools would enroll students by English ability.  We can take part in GEPT or IELTS to obtain English certificates and prove our ability.   Besides, English is also essential for us to make some specific professions, such as an interpreter or a secretary.  Last but not the least, if you learn English, and you would be more competitive than those who only understand one language.
